Join us on September 29th for an evening with cartoonist and author, Alison Bechdel, to kick off the 2023 Green Mountain Book Festival.
Bechdel's comic strip Dykes To Watch Out For, which ran from 1983-2008, became a countercultural institution among lesbians and discerning non-lesbians all over the planet. And her more recent, darkly humorous graphic memoirs about her family have forged an unlikely intimacy with an even wider range of readers.
In 2006 she published Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic. Time magazine named it the Best Book of 2006. It was adapted into a musical by the playwright Lisa Kron and the composer Jeanine Tesori. It opened on Broadway at the Circle in the Square Theater on April 19, 2015, and won five Tony Awards, including “Best Musical.”
In her work, Bechdel is preoccupied with the overlap of the political and the personal spheres, the relationship of the self to the world outside.
We are thrilled to welcome Alison Bechdel as the headliner of the Green Mountain Book Festival, a nonprofit organization that's aimed at bringing a weekend of literary celebration and community to Burlington every fall. In her own words: “I’m excited to be a part of this year’s GMBF, both as a local Vermont author and as someone whose work has been a target of recent book bans. Come celebrate the power of books to get us out of our individual silos to understand and connect with each other.”
Joining Bechdel is Lieutenant Governor Zuckerman, who will kick off our ceremony by discussing the impact of book banning. We are also welcoming local author and illustrator, Frances Cannon, who will be introducing Alison Bechdel.
Doors open at 6PM, and the event begins at 6:30!
