The Aurora Chamber Singers will present its spring concert, “Seeds of Modernism,” at the College Street Congregational Church, 265 College
Street, in Burlington Vermont. The program of late Romantic European music by Gabriel Fauré, Charles Gounod, César Franck, and Anton Bruckner, features the voices of the Aurora Chamber Singers, soloists and organ, under the leadership of conductor David Neiweem.
At the end of the 19th century, Romantic style began shifting, opening the door to modernism. Choral music of the time used a lush harmonic language and grand proportion. We can discern the seeds of stylistic change in the choral compositions selected for this program: Charles Gounod’s Messe breve no. 7, Anton Bruckner’s “Windhaager” Messe, César Frank’s Psalm 150, and Gabriel Fauré’s Cantique de Jean Racine. The selection is perfectly suited for the acoustics of the church where it will be performed, built at roughly the same time as the music was conceived.
We look forward to sharing this gorgeous music with you!
