Pretty Face: An American Dream

Written and performed by Amanda Huotari

Directed by Aitor Basauri

Feb 29 at 7:30 p.m. and March 1 at 1 p.m.

Pretty Face dares you: Burst your bubble and indulge in the outrageous comedy of our time.

“Masterful… an exceptional physical performer” --PORTFRINGE FIRST LOOK

The One & Only Series is delighted to present Pretty Face: An American dream as part of their 2020 solo series celebrating solo performance in its Vermont debut at the Grange Hall Cultural Center. From Maine, to Hawaii, to Indianapolis and Montreal, and soon to hit NYC's Tank Theater on 36th Street, Pretty Face is "blowing the roof off!" (Ha Ha Hawaii Physical Comedy Festival). Funny and fearless, Pretty Face chews up the unbearable American newsfeed and spits out a story that you’ll love to hate and hate to love. With razor-sharp wit, she’ll both seduce and disturb you.

Speaking of you—are you totally over this political circus? Eager for change, but cozy in your comfort zone? How long are you willing to wait? How much are you willing to lose? Your freedom and our country are at stake. WAKE UP!

Or, maybe just check Instagram… if you only have a sec right now.

BIOS:

Amanda Huotari (performer) toured her original solo work to international venues including the New York Clown Theatre Festival, Seattle’s Moisture Festival, the Ha Ha Hawaii Physical Theater Fest, and Bogota, Colombia’s Teatro R101. She’s currently in her 13th season serving as Executive Artistic Director of Celebration Barn Theater, Maine’s international center for creating and performing original theater, where she produces 30+ shows and hosts over 200 artists from around the globe annually. Amanda received a BFA in acting from Emerson College and studied physical theater at L’École Internationale de Théatre Jacques Lecoq in France. She’s been a guest teaching artist at colleges including Dartmouth, Bates, and Bowdoin. Amanda has created and performed in many original productions of physical theater, including The Soirée (directed by Avner Eisenberg, made possible with support from the Maine Arts Commission), The Fabulous Problemas (a Colombian-American collaboration, directed by Davis Robinson), and Camp Maine (an innovative, interactive production, directed by Jeff Wirth).

Aitor Basauri, Spymonkey’s Joint Artistic Director, (director) is one of the most sought after and leading teachers of clown and physical comedy in the world. He regularly runs Spymonkey masterclasses in London, Brighton and New York, is a staff tutor at Cirque du Soleil Las Vegas, and teaches at Ecole Phillipe Gaulier. Aitor studied at the Centro Andaluz de Teatro in Seville and at the Philippe Gaulier School in London. He performed in The Servant of Two Masters at Sheffield Crucible (1996), Axomate at the Seville Expo (1992), Eulenspiegel (1991) and in Karl’s Kuhne Gassenchau’s Grand Paradis and Stau in Zurich (1997 and 1998). He directed Little Prince for Donkey Productions (1997), Un Vento Impetuoso for La Canoppia (1996) and Meci Y Me Fui for Pez Enraya ( 1997). In 1999 he appeared in Circus Knie, the Swiss State Circus, and in 2000 formed his own company Punto Fijo, based in Bilbao. He also appeared in Cirque Images’ 2003 series Solstrom for Bravo Cable Network, performed in Zumanity – Another Side of Cirque du Soleil at the New York New York Hotel Casino, Las Vegas, 2003-05, and in Bertold Brecht’s Senor Carrera’s Rifles at the Young Vic, directed by Paul Hunter (2007). Spymonkey was founded by Toby Park, Petra Massey and Aitor Basauri in 1997. With their dark, edgy physical comedy rooted ‘somewhere between Monty Python, the Marx Brothers and Samuel Beckett’ (The Houston Chronicle), and a quartet of performers from Spain, Germany and England, Spymonkey have proved to be a truly international phenomenon, enjoyed by and accessible to a wide range of international audiences.
