Picnic Dance Company is a contemporary dance company based in Burlington, Vermont. Currently, the company is comprised of five women who have danced together in varying capacities for over ten years. This newest work was produced under the creative direction of Alyssa Jones, though the company’s process is highly collaborative.
“Reciprocity: the Legend of the Crane Wife” is an interpretation of an ancient Japanese folktale referred to as “Tsuru no Ongaeshi” or “The Crane’s Return of a Favor.” The show, with a run time of approximately 25 minutes, explores themes of connection, sacrifice, selflessness, betrayal, and loss. What happens when a promise is made under false pretenses? Who is at fault when that promise is broken? What is the consequence when a clearly delineated boundary is overstepped?
This will be a fairly intimate viewing experience, hosted at Soapbox Arts gallery in Burlington's south end. A complimentary beverage is included in the purchase of a ticket. Seating is general admission. Doors will open 30 minutes before each showing.
