Chris Staples is an American indie rock musician originally from Pensacola, Florida, long based in Seattle, Washington. There are no casual Chris Staples fans. Play his music during a road trip with friends and inevitably someone will ask, “Who is this?” And a lifelong fan is born. Such is the unaffected power of these songs, of this voice. A phenomenally dexterous guitarist, Staples has spent much of his career so far as a backing musician for other artists. Join us for an enchanting evening of Americana and folk music featuring three remarkable acts!

Headliners The Peavine Boys bring their danceable blend of rockabilly and old-time country, featuring rich harmonies and a full band arrangement. Vermont's own Jennings and McComber (Andy and Kara Lake) share their heartfelt original folk compositions. Opening the night, New Hampshire songwriter Katie Dobbins delivers poetic storytelling through her uplifting songs.

We take playing around very seriously in the Healthy Kids Kitchen. We also manage to squeeze in some learning too. And of course, we make super tasty food.

Once a month, we'll meet in The Kitchen to flex our cooking skills and cook up delicious meals. Then we'll all sit down and feast on our amazing creations. There may even be a little leftover to take home. No promises though.

This month we'll be cooking up "better than take-out" Asian style favorites.

Plattsburgh Blues and Jazz, in conjunction with ET Harris & Sons, is proud to present the Danielle Nicole Band on Saturday, April 26th, at Retro Live. Danielle Nicole is a 2019 Grammy nominee for Best Contemporary Blues Album, a seven-time Blues Music Award winner, and Independent Music Award winner. Hailing from Kansas City, she is a powerhouse singer, songwriter, and bassist known for her stunning vocals, exceptional musicianship, and captivating stage presence that leaves audiences breathless. The Danielle Nicole Band is a festival favorite and headlines performances worldwide. Her remarkable new album, "The Love You Bleed," has reached number one on both the Billboard and iTunes charts.

Opening the show will be Kandrah, a talented young local singer-songwriter recognized as a mesmerizing future star. Kandrah won the Clinton County Got Talent contest and has performed on "America's Got Talent," at Carnegie Hall, and in various local musical productions. She is truly fantastic!

Retro Live will transform into a vibrant music club featuring a large stage, two stories, a wraparound balcony, high-top tables, and chairs, providing plenty of space for socializing and dancing. Advance tickets are $20, while tickets on the day of the show will be $25.

Handel's Saul

Handel’s Saul, an epic oratorio for five vocal soloists, orchestra, and chorus, dramatizes the life of King Saul, who lived c. 1000 BCE. Saul’s jealousy of David (of David and Goliath) forces Saul’s three children to choose between the two, which leads to a tragic end.

The Burlington Choral Society’s performance will feature vocal soloists at the height of their careers, including countertenor Timothy Parsons (as David) and soprano Madeline Healey, co-directors of the Richmond, Vermont-based early music vocal ensemble Ampersand.

“With Saul, Handel produced one of the supreme masterpieces of dramatic art,” writes Winton Dean, foremost authority on Handel’s operas and oratorios.

Burlington Choral Society’s Artistic Director Richard Riley says “I believe that the dramatic impact of this powerful work, one eerily present in our own country today, will stay in the memories of all who are there.”

Seth Yacovone Band is returning to the Mad River Valley to make their debut at Afterthoughts on April 26th. Promoting their new album SYBLINGS Vol 1, get ready for a night of spreadable JAMS!

In this workshop, we will tackle making focaccia bread dough and decorate it your own way with various herbs and veggies. You'll go home with your own 8 inch square pan of focaccia art and the recipe to make it again on your own at home.

Children must have the supervision of an adult. The ticket form includes options for plus ones/helpers/guardians to attend without a kit.

Jaded Ravins
Jaded Ravins members Kelly Ravin and Halle Jade began performing together in 2017 after Halle joined Kelly in the recording of his 5th highly acclaimed album "Engine".  

Ravin, former lead singer and guitarist of Waylon Speed now performs his soulful Americana, and country rock originals with Halle Jade. Halle's tasty harmonies and Kelly's powerful voice along with their engaging entertainment style make them a dynamic and expressive duo*. 

Kelly and Halle, who have been called a modern day Johnny and June, perform in large and small venues from New England to Nashville. Whether they're playing at home in backcountry bars, or in big city clubs, Jaded Ravins are always ready to pour their hearts out on stage.

Red River North
Red River North's sound draws on the distinctive "red dirt country" style native to the "Texahoma" region, where much of the music they play and their lead singer originate. They bring southern vocals, acoustic instrumentation, and storytelling songs that capture the essence of small-town life and rugged Americana.

Sarah King
Known for her powerhouse voice and "fiery, vulnerable songs," Sarah King creates thought-provoking, versatile Americana music. Her genuine stories about real-life emotions and situations also draw on classic folk-blues themes, balancing songs about the devil and booze with hard-won moments of reflection and acceptance. Her acclaimed 2021 EP The Hour, produced by Simone Felice and David Baron, earned her recognition as the New England Music Awards songwriter of the Year and performances at the 2022 Folk Alliance International and Philadelphia Folk festivals, as well as supporting slots for acts including Blues Traveler, The Steel Woods, Anders Osborne, & Nathan Graham. She won the Great River Folk Festival Singer/Songwriter Contest in 2023.

From the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico to coal burning plants in the Ruhr Valley of Germany, from the glorious heights of mountain ranges in Alaska to mountains of potassium waste in Eastern Germany, Resonating Earth was created in response to the climate crisis. With a wide range of ambient music, including Bach, Nico Muhly, Pia Møller Johansen, Missy Mazzoli, Philip Glass, Marcos Balter, Iman Habibi and Caroline Shaw; alongside stunning imagery of the environment by Peabody Award-winning producer Elliott Forrest(WQXR), visual artist Myles Aronowitz, and internationally-exhibited environmental activist and photographer J Henry Fair, Resonating Earth creates a soundscape focusing on the beauty in our environment and inspires environmental activism in an artistic, musically immersive way.

Resonating Earth seeks to transport listeners to a still, meditative space, allowing them to decompress from their daily lives, and invites introspection about humanity’s place on the planet, inspiring action to protect our beautiful, fragile world. 

Pianist Carolyn Enger is well known for presenting engaging and unique programs, informed by a keen sense of identity, history, and personal connection. An acclaimed recording artist, Carolyn’s 2013 Naxos recording of music by Ned Rorem, Piano Album I, was selected by Anthony Tommasini as one of The New York Times’ “Best in Classical Recordings.” A sought-after recitalist with an international itinerary, Carolyn has presented programs at numerous prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall, The National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center, the Felicja Blumental Center in Tel Aviv, Michaeliskirche in Erfurt, and The National Gallery in Oslo.

By the Still Water

The Aurora Chamber Singers presents its spring concert “By the Still Water,” under the direction of guest conductor, Jeff Rehbach.

The program features choral works in varied styles by composers from the Baroque through the early Romantic eras, including Monteverdi, Rameau, Durante, Bach, Reicha, Schubert, and Mendelssohn. They will perform a mix of a cappella works and those accompanied by strings with organ and piano.

"Our program presents music from nearly four hundred years ago to the present,” says maestro Rehbach. “With historic Psalms, poetry and other texts from Renaissance times to the present, we give voice to longing for quiet, inspiration, fulfillment, and joy. Our songs share concern for all, celebration and praise, care for our world, and hope for peace."

Vermont premieres include three fugues for string quartet and chorus by Anton Reicha (a contemporary of Beethoven); a work for chorus and piano from the late 19th century by American composer Amy Cheney Beach; and a cappella choral music by 20th-century British viola virtuoso and composer Rebecca Clarke. The concert is honored to offer the world premiere Make of your house a house of peace by Vermont composer and Aurora Chamber Singer Maarten van Ryckevorsel.

Little Chefs, Big Bites is a fun and engaging cooking class series designed for kids and parents to cook together, learn new skills, and create delicious dishes as a team! In each session, families will explore exciting recipes, practice basic kitchen techniques, and enjoy the joy of making and sharing food. From hands-on mixing and measuring to tasting their own creations, little chefs will gain confidence in the kitchen while making big bites of flavorful fun. Join us for a culinary adventure where cooking becomes a family bonding experience!

In Brunch Buddies, kids and parents will make a family-friendly feast that’s perfect for weekend mornings! Whether you’re practicing for a special occasion (ahem, Mother’s Day? Father’s Day?) or celebrating an ordinary Saturday, this class will show you how much fun it is to cook with your kid. After sharing the feast that we’ve made, you’ll walk away with a pleasantly-full belly (and possible leftovers!), recipes to keep, hands-on practice, and a new understanding of how to involve your kiddo in the kitchen.

This cooking class is led by Chef Ariel Voorhees of Gather Round Chef Service, a personal-chef service that helps busy families relax and connect over a good dinner at the end of a long day.

About the Instructor: 

Chef Ariel Voorhees believes that sharing food is the best way for people to connect. Through her personal chef service, Gather Round Chef Service, she cooks custom meals in clients' homes to help busy families connect each night over a delicious homemade dinner. And with 14 years of classroom teaching experience, Chef Ariel absolutely loves teaching folks how to share delicious food with their loved ones. As a lifelong student of food cultures from around the world, she finds joy in helping others bring new flavors into their own homes. 

On May 4, Green Mountain Monteverdi Ensemble of Vermont presents perhaps the greatest piece of music composed before the time of Bach, Monteverdi's Vespro della Beata Vergine, more commonly known as the Vespers of 1610. Monteverdi was a true innovator, combining virtuoso instrumental and vocal lines over a foundation of plainchant melodies in a way never done before. The result is astonishingly beautiful music.

GMMEV features an all-Vermont cast of vocalists. GMMEV's soloists are joined by Counterpoint, Vermont's professional vocal ensemble. The world-class orchestra comprises brass and string players from the Montreal area, supported by top-notch continuo players from Vermont and the Boston area.

PB&J Concerts is excited to present Vanessa Collier coming to Retro Live, Plattsburgh NY on Sunday May 4th at 6PM. Vannessa Collier is heart soul & saxophone and keeps it Saxy!

She is a 15-time Blues Music Award nominee and four-time winner, including Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year and Horn Player of the Year. Her rise to the top of the music industry is nothing short of meteoric, with a voice and performance that compares to that of Bonnie Raitt, Collier turns up the heat with the charisma to get the crowd in the palm of her hand.

This will be her 5th performance to Plattsburgh and its been two years since her last performance. Vanessa recently released her sixth album, "Do It My Own Way," inspired by soul icons like Mavis Staples, Sharon Jones, James Brown, and Aretha Franklin.

Students will have hands-on experience making and filling macarons and will go home with step-by-step instructions, including the recipe, troubleshooting guide, and equipment list, and approximately 2 dozen macarons!

Elizabeth Berman is owner of Small Oven Pastries, a small-batch bakery located in Shelburne, Vermont, that specializes in Parisian-style macarons, meringues, and other bite-sized delights. Always obsessed with the balance of creativity and science in baking, she found her match in making French macarons, a deceptively simple recipe that has achieved cult status for a reason. A recovering academic, Elizabeth is excited to be back in the classroom sharing her obsession with others – she truly believes anyone can make macarons!

The program will include a contemplation of fantasy and dreams with Missy Mazzoli “Quartet for Queen Mab”; the wonder of the space we exist in with Shelly Washington “Middleground”; folk idioms and the spirit of dance and movement with Jessie Montgomery “STRUM”; the fearless relevance of Kyle Saulier  “at the edge of a world not unlike our own”; the world premiere of “Nadia” (translation hope) by Erik Nielsen, a work dedicated to the people of Ukraine. Physical access. Accessing the gallery involves climbing up two steps and walking on the paved sidewalk of a paved street. A ramp can be provided on request. The venue is single story. We have a bathroom on site on the first floor, however it is not ADA compliant. 

Personal assistants. If you require a personal assistant or caregiver with you, we will be happy to offer them a complimentary ticket. To arrange this, simply add a complimentary caregiver ticket to your basket when booking online.

Assistance dogs. We welcome assistance and guide dogs at The Phoenix and are happy for them to accompany you in any of our spaces at the venue and can join you in the gallery for events. Please notify us if you will be bringing a dog to a performance so we can alert the artists.

Programs. If an artist is supplying a program for their performance, copies printed in a large, easy to read font are available upon request. Please notify us 48hrs in advance if you require an accessible program at [email protected].

Zongzi 粽子 are traditionally eaten during Duanwu Festival, also known as Dragon Boat Festival, which falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar. Zongzi is a traditional dish made of glutinous rice stuffed with different fillings and wrapped in bamboo leaves. They are cooked by boiling. There are sweet and savory zongzi depending on the region of origin.

We’ll be making savory meat zongzi during this session. We will be wrapping together, you then take home to cook. Additional set of 3 are available for $18.

Two different grand finale concerts will be performed by over a dozen favorite performers dating back to our first season of CCC: The Borromeo String Quartet, pianists Jeffrey Chappell and Jeewon Park, cellist Edward Arron, flutist Karen Kevra, an ensemble featuring violinist Laurie Smukler, and the vocal duo Sibyl. These blockbuster concerts include the music of Brahms, Mozart, J.S. Bach, Manuel De Falla, Ravel, and Mendelssohn.

Pennsylvania-based House of Hamill is a fixture on festival stages across the US, and have shared their music and stories on the country’s premier folk stages. Their version of “Pound a Week Rise” rose to #1 on the US Folk DJ charts, and the video for their all-violin cover of “Sweet Child O’ Mine” amassed over 16 million views on Facebook, where it was shared over 400,000 times. 

The band's upcoming release, “Wildfire,” marks House of Hamill's most compelling work to date. Featuring their strongest and most exciting songwriting, “Wildfire” is filled with lyrical depth, sophisticated vocal and instrumental arrangements, and hooks that are simply irresistible. This album captures the vibrant energy and creativity that have become the hallmarks of a House of Hamill live show.

Dutch Experts was born out of the Covid Pandemic amidst the crumbling of societal infrastructure. This destruction mirrored singer/songwriter Hannah Hoffman’s own experiences during lockdown. Turning one of her lowest and most challenging points into a revisitation of her approach to sound, Hoffman began experimenting with layering synths and electronic drum beats in Garageband, creating a sonic landscape that bore the fruits of Dutch Experts and the creation of a debut EP, ‘Bound by This’. Inspired by her personal challenges, the gothic landscape of The Cure, and melodic choices informed by Kate Bush and Cocteau Twins, Hoffman locked into a sound that became uniquely modern yet captured an 80s sonic sensibility: synth pop with a darkwave edge. Recorded, mixed & mastered by Mikey Allred (All Them Witches, Inter Arma), Dutch Experts' debut EP, 'Bound By This' released on February 24, 2023, available both digitally and on vinyl.

Get Ready! The Alexis P. Suter Band Is Coming to Town! On Friday, May 24th, the powerhouse blues and soul sensation, Alexis P. Suter Band, is rolling into Plattsburgh, NY for one unforgettable night of live music at Retro Live.

With a voice that’s been described as “earth-shaking” and a stage presence that captivates from the first note, Alexis P. Suter and her band deliver a soulful, gritty, and high-energy performance that’s earned standing ovations from coast to coast. "The Alexis P. Suter Band, a powerful and unique five-piece ensemble that blends the lines between Blues, Soul, Gospel, and Rock music.

Alexis P. Suter Band burst onto the music scene as regular performers at Levon Helm’s legendary Midnight Rambles in Woodstock, NY, and has frequently opened for BB King. Three-time Blues Music Award nominee Alexis P. Suter owns that big, booming voice heard roaring out of Brooklyn, New York, that has been described as explosive and soul-bearing. This will be her third performance in Plattsburgh with her Blues Band, and she was recently featured as the star solo artist with the Plattsburgh Gospel Choir for their 2024 Christmas Gospel concert.

We turn Retro Live into a music club with a large stage, dance area, high-topped tables and chairs with plenty of room to move and see friends, both new and old. Tickets are 20 in advance and 25 at the door.

Greenleaf, a Vermont-born guitarist and composer, embraces the unique challenges and strengths that shape his playing, including the influence of his cerebral palsy on his approach to the instrument. Live at Ford Hall represents an unfiltered self-portrait of an artist fully embracing his musical voice. “This is as close as I could get to who I am right now,” Greenleaf explains. “It’s supposed to feel raw and unrefined because that’s what I can do.”

Full Circle Theater Collaborative presents BabyCakes, a new play by local playwright Leila Teitelman.

Grieving parents attempt to face bereavement by attending local support meetings. Helen, a new addition to the group and a recent transplant, creates tension and raises suspicion within the well-established cohort when she refuses to open up about her past. The group must ultimately contend with their own feelings of discomfort while unearthing collective biases and deciding who is most deserving of their support. BabyCakes is an exploration of loss, birth, the hypocrisies of parenthood, and the death of loved ones.

Blabpipe
Blabpipe is an underground rock band that blends rock riffs, upbeat rhythms, melodic vocals, and poetically charged lyrics into a distinctive sound. Formed in New England, the band began as a trio with Ray (vocals/guitar), Sean (bass), and Greg (drums). Their early years were marked by original songs and performances across northern bars.

Influenced by current events and combining literature, art, and hard-driving rock, Blabpipe quickly gained a reputation for thought-provoking songs with diverse textures and emotions. After releasing their first EP, 6 Pack (2015), they followed up with albums Avalanche (2017), Gen X (2018), Idle Hands (2020), Early Rock Years (2023), and the single I Fight Monsters (2021).

Brother T and the Boys
Brother T and the Boys is a high-energy punk/hard rock band from New York's Capital and Adirondack regions. Led by the charismatic Brother T (Thomas Hogan), alongside James Krone on bass and Toddeee D. on drums, the power trio is known for their unique stage presence - complete with rubber chickens and slide whistles. The band has expanded beyond their local territory to venues in Burlington and Brooklyn, delivering performances that blend punk attitude with community spirit. Their music is available on Bandcamp.

The Grandstand Jockeys 
Formed in 2021 by ex-punk drummer Ron Burris, The Grandstand Jockeys are a four-piece band from New York known for captivating fans with their unique, guitar-driven brand of grunge pop. With a reputation for electric performances and two EPs under their belt – with a third incoming – they are building momentum every day as they work towards their goal of becoming the world's biggest band.

In each session, families will explore exciting recipes, practice basic kitchen techniques, and enjoy the joy of making and sharing food. From hands-on mixing and measuring to tasting their own creations, little chefs will gain confidence in the kitchen while making big bites of flavorful fun. Join us for a culinary adventure where cooking becomes a family bonding experience!

In Pizza Party, kids and parents will make a family-friendly feast that’s perfect for pizza night! Whether you’re looking for a special activity or ready to switch your pizza night routine from takeout to homemade, this class will show you how much fun it is to cook with your kid. After sharing the feast that we’ve made, you’ll walk away with a pleasantly-full belly (and possible leftovers!), recipes to keep, hands-on practice, and a new understanding of how to involve your kiddo in the kitchen.

Chef Ariel Voorhees believes that sharing food is the best way for people to connect. Join us for an introduction to blockprinting with linoleum.  Using images from the garden we will draw onto the linoleum and learn to carve and print. You'll make a series of prints with your new image and take home your linoleum block to continue your printing adventure! 

This is the fourth year that jen has offered this workshop at Horsford Garden & Nursery. The workshop is in a barn surrounded by the beauty of the gardens.

One LoVermont was established to cultivate and further the spirit of ONE LOVE; a universal respect for all people, and Vermont's own state motto of Freedom & Unity with a focus on reggae & international music, as well as supporting community, local agriculture and artisanry, small farming, hand craftsmanship and sustainable living.

Join us for a weekend of freedom, unity and fun! Live musical acts from Jamaica, artisan vendors, engaging workshops, overnight camping! Full schedule of events and workshops to be announced soon.

Friday Afternoon/Evening: Workshops, Unity Dinner and the Enchanted Forest featuring live drumming, EDM and Dub music. The 3rd Annual Vermont Psychic Expo is coming to the Champlain Valley Exposition in Essex Junction, Vermont on Saturday, August 9th & Sunday, August 10th, 2025. The Expo North will host readers, workshops, vendors, performers and more.

The 4th Annual Vermont Steampunk Expo is returning to Vermont on November 8th & 9th, 2025. The Champlain Valley Exposition will host a weekend of Victorian Science Fiction and Fantasy for the whole family. 

The Expo will include dozens of authors, artists, makers and vendors. Patrons will be able to participate in and enjoy daily panels and workshops as well as musical entertainment and live demonstrations. Everyone is welcome to come in costume (tasteful) but it is not required.

The Expo is a family-friendly event for all ages.

Pianist Diana Fanning has toured extensively as a solo performer and chamber musician throughout the U.S. and in England, France, Austria, Switzerland, Holland, the Czech Republic, Canada and Germany. After a concert in Munich, a critic wrote that “Diana Fanning stunned her listeners with the rich spectrum of subtle colors and tonal nuances she revealed. Her recital seized the audience with a veritable deep magic.” Ms. Fanning has performed on numerous occasions as a concerto soloist with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Fanning has taught at Middlebury for over 40 years.

She will present a program including works by Chopin, Janacek, Fauré and Beethoven.

A portion of the concert proceeds will support Red Cross Disaster Relief.
