Deep North Bios
Shadir Mohamed was a 19-year-old farmer when the Somali Civil War uprooted him and his family, forcing them to flee to a Kenyan refugee camp where terrorists continued to target them as Somali Bantu.
Fardusa A. Abdo escaped to Yemen when the war destroyed her small town in southern Somalia. She single-handedly raised seven children, two of whom with disabilities, before they escaped the breakout of war in Yemen.
Abdihamid A. Muhumed grew up in a family of nomadic camel herders until gunmen killed his father and brother and stole their animals. He fled to Kenya where he lived for years in a desolate refugee camp before reuniting with his family in Vermont.
These three extraordinary stories offer a rare first-hand account of the challenges, opportunities, hardships, and hope of Somali refugees resettled in Vermont.
